Super-Art Class with Cher Compton Rocks!
What is a Super-Art class? A Super-Art class (in my definition of this made-up term) is when Art comes alive. Art with Cher Compton is not just another Art class. It's a Super-Art class.
Cher doesn't just teach the basics of art, she teaches all about it. Classes with Cher are multi-faceted, they look at the whole picture. In a normal class with Cher, the students will learn a little bit about the history of what they're going to practice, then they learn a little about the culture, then about the challenges of the artist and then, while listening to music from the period, they learn about the technique, style or methods of the day.
These children are hooked from the moment she steps in the room. One day, they learned to disco dance while learning about Andy Warhol and the pop art movement. Another day, they stepped into the shoes of Michelangelo and the other renaissance artists who painted the ceilings of the great landmarks of Europe, by doing their masterpiece's while laying on their backs looking up-at the bottom of the ping-pong table. Some of the many topics they have covered so far this year include:
The Italian Rennaisance: Michelangelo and the Cistene chapel with rennaisance dance
music and photos of Rome and Florence. Painting a ceiling project.
U.S. 60s and 70s: Pop Art. Fashion, popular music of the 70's Andy Warhol and Peter Max. Pop art designs of soda cans and cell phones.
German Bauhaus with Paul Klee: Tissue transfer resist technique. Klee was also a violinist so we did his favorite composers, Mozart and Bach
French Pointillism: Georges Seurat. Painting in dots with q-tips
Cubism: Picasso. Cubist portraits in mixed media. Lalo's Spanish Symphany
Naturalism and Anthropomorphism: English Naturalist Painters, Beatrix Potter, children's literature (Peter Rabbit). Music by Elgar. Portraying animals with human attributes.
